I live in a very rural unincorporated community about 15 miles from the nearest store. The population consists of the elderly, part time residents and working families (pop. less than 50) The area is mostly citrus groves and pastures for cattle. One of the grove owners is attempting a zoning change to allow for a 150 man farm worker housing complex which will impact property values, security, and triple the population with contract workers (all men) from Mexico with no way to go to any populated center on their time off. Needless to say the resident don''t want it. The Public hearing is coming up, what can we do to stop this?

Optional Information:
Wauchula, Florida

Already Tried:
Enlisting the community residents to show up at the Public Meeting, I have distributed literature re: what the change may mean to our community. Currently, cirulating a petition against the zoning change from the community residents.

Dear Customer (name blocked for privacy) - You can vigorously oppose this zoning change and attend all meetings on the issue. The more people you can muster the better. You can write letters to your elected officials and you can hire legal counsel to file an appeal if the zoning board rules in favor of a change. You can bet that the other side will do the same if they lose at this level.

There are various levels of appeals before any of this is final but you must take a stand now. It can get expensive to fight things like this because I'm certain that the grower will have plenty of lawyers on their side. You will have to decide how much you want to spend to keep this going through the courts since I doubt the grower will simply give up if the lose at first.

Reply to Dave Kennett's Post: We are planning to have the majority of the residents at the meeting and this does appear to be a reality for us to be able to accomplish, but as I have indicated, our population is low. I do hope that the percentage (say 80-90%) of residents who are opposed and show up to oppose is more of a factor than just their numbers (35-45 people).

Thanks for the advice
