I have jury duty in May and I know I will be instructed to not go out of town but I really want to go out of town for an event the weekend right in middle of jury duty. It is 350 miles away from omaha to minneapolis. Leave Friday evening after jury duty (assuming I get picked) and come back Sunday morning at 1130am well before 9am Monday when I need to be back. I can't imagine anything happening that would prevent me from coming back but let's say some unforeseen disaster happened and I couldn't make it back til Monday and I missed MOnday jury duty. What would the judge do to me?

ACCEPTED Check Mark

If you ask for permission to leave town and that request is DENIED, and you then go anyway, you would be subject to a finding of direct contempt of court. Most states limit punishment for such an offense to 60 days of actual jail, but that's still a long jail sentence for something that is supposed to be a civic responsibility. I am not concluding that the Judge would automatically impose such a punishment, but it certainly is a possibility.

Best of luck!

Thanks for the nnswer. I thought you would say I would get a 150 dollar fine or something like that and i would take my chances with that. But not 60 days in jail. I think I will reschedule the trip. Thanks a lot
