A friend did'nt register for 8 months he is now

A friend did'nt register for 8 months he is now looking at 3 years in jail if he pleads guilty they did not file the warrant until after he registered what are his options? his court appointed lawyer is not helping all they have done is filed a motion for probation he has been out 7 years with no problems he works and has a family and has'nt had any trouble with the police beside minor tickets he served 8 years does any of that account for anything what should we do? is there any chance to keep his freedom if he does not plead guilty?
