Question

my husband left and did not leave me any money and did ...

Sent to Legal Experts November 16, 2007 10:11 p.m.

my husband left and did not leave me any money and did not pay and bills, my utilities are being turned off, and there is no food left for the pets. I have called and left him messages telling this on our cell phone. I filed for a legal sereration to protect myself from him gambling debts, bill collectors keep calling, his income is railroad disability/retirement and veterans disability compensation for a total of 4,630.00 per mo. He is not paying anything because he now knows his income is protected from garnishment from bills. They say if a judge awards me spouce support I can garnish it. This all takes time if it even is awarded, is there any thing I can do to get something now ? my utilities are not going to wait for all this court procedure, and the pets can't wait to eat that long either. I an not employed and have medical conditions that I have just started working on a disability claim which could take months if not years to go through. My husband knew I had nothing.

Hello Customer (name blocked for privacy),

I am so sorry you are going through this. How can he be so unfeeling?

You can file for spousal support and ask for an emergency hearing. Talk to a few lawyers, and if you can, get legal aid to help you. You could get this filed and possibly a hearing in a week or so, if you get going Monday. You may have to call a few lawyers. He can be made to cover your attorney fees. So, you do your best to get legal help.

Take care of yourself and your pets right now. If you have to sell something to keep your utilities on, do that. We are conditioned not to dispose of our possessions, but if you are desparate, sell something, or pawn something. It's only "stuff" after all.

Until then, apply for some help with the county or local churches. There are organizations online to help with pet food, if you cannot afford to feed them.

If you have friends or relatives, ask them, too for help. You would do the same for them, and you will be on your feet soon.

I hope this helps. Good Luck!
