What are the laws in Alabama?

I live in Alabama. I have a 22 month old little boy. His father has nothing to do with him his whole life. He hasn't seen him in almost a year; he doesn't even pick up the phone to call and check on him. A friend of mine had his rights automatically terminated bacause he had not seen his little boy in 1 year; even though the little boys mom had a restraining order on him to not be around either of them. Is this the case in Alabama? And what do I need to do to change this situation?
