A landlord may charge tenants for cleaning of the house or damages to the premisses. The landlord cannot charge a fee for ordinary wear and tear which would most certainly include light bulbs and batteries for smoke detectors. AS a result, I would suggest challenging the charges in court that are not related to wear and tear.
If the parties signed the lease, there is little that can be done whatn a third tennant was left off the lease. the landlord cannot pursue that tenant since he was not on the lease. Moreover, all of the tenants are jointly liable. That means the landlord could seek to collect the entire amount against any one of them.
