My father recently passed away and I know that he had a will leaving his property to my sister and I, his only heirs. I cannot find the will. He has three homes, one in Las vegas, Nevada, Brigantine, New Jersey and Staten Island, New York, there is no money and that is his entire estate. I know there is a federal tax exclusion amount of up to $2,000,000, which all three homes do not equal this amount. But I need to know if there is a state tax for any of these states. I believe there is no state estate tax in Nevada, but am not sure for New Jersey or New York. In addition, can either my sister and or myself just get ourselves named Administrator of the estate just by going down to the courts in each state. Again, my father had his main residence in Las Vegas, NV where I am a resident and the other in NJ, where my sister is a resident and the last in NY. Please let me know? Can we do this ourselves & avoid using an attorney?
