My mother passed away on October 30, 2007. I have been having her estate handled by a law firm in Northville, Michigan.
I am the executor of the estate. The house was willed to me and have since received the deed. There is also money in trust. I am the family trustee and there is an attorney as the independent trustee.
I have received billing for services. The fees mostly handled by a paralegal of the firm I used to execute the estate are extraordinary. I believe there is an
excessive amount of bill padding.
Unfortunately, I paid the bill before realizing what I had done and the check has been cashed.
What can I do to recoup some of the losses to the estate for the exorbitant legal fees charged by this firm.

Optional Information:
Livonia, Michigan

I have spoken to the paralegal and questioned the billing. I was met with excuses. "I don't have the bill in front of me. I am not the one who handles the billing for the firm." She offered to set up a phone appointment with attorney handling the matters for the estate. I accepted with the assurance from her that I would not be charged by him to discuss the billing. I need to know what questions to ask him what I can do to get satisfaction in the situation.

Options: 1) request a meeting with the law firm and get a copy of the complete bill. 2) take the bill to an accountant and ask for a review of the bill. 3) get a copy of the retainer agreement that specifies the charges. If there is over billing the accountant will discover it. If the bill is excessive you can contact other estate lawyers and get bids for services. With this information you can hire a new law firm or negotiate aggressively with the current law firm. Good luck.
