if someone had three seperate charges and was

if someone had three seperate charges and was sentenced but the time was suspended and he was placed on probation, but then violated by getting dirty urines ( no new charges). The judge gave him all his back up time he is about to be finished, but in the court docs it says that he will be placed on 5 years supervised release. How is that possible when he served every last bit of his sentence, and has no more back up time.
