I have a court appointed mediation agreement between myself and my son's mother. Now that he is going to school in the fall I would like joint custody of my son, with his primary residence being my home. I'm going to court for this but am worried that New York state automatically favors the mother. What do I need to do to prepare for this?

Optional Information:
Syracuse, New York

Already Tried:
I went for a consultation with a family court lawyer who basically laughed at me and said because I was ONLY the father, I had no chance no matter how unfit the mother was.
