wage garnishment
Sent to Legal Experts July 28 09:36 PM

Can a creditor find out your place of employment for wage garnishment? I have a judgment from a local court and have a new job since the credit was opened, is it possible for the creditor to find out my place of employment and garnish my wages?

Greetings:

Yes, creditors can locate one's employment for wage garnishment. They can also file bank levies and seize the bank account, including possible liens on property. Collection on wage garnishment, however, can only be for a certain amount - not the entire paycheck.

Reply to The Mystic Wave's Post: How would they locate my place of employment if I was not employed by the company I am now at when the credit was extended? I am a single mom of 3, making very little and if they attach my wages, I will DEFINETLY sink fast!! Any suggestions?

Greetings:

Thank you for responding.

They can obtain it through Social Security number and other means through investigation. However, being that you are a single mom with children and earning low wages, they may not be able to secure the monies (or, if so, a very small sum)- as you can petition the court for consideration.

If you wish for further information, please let me know.
