what length of steel constitutes a knife

I am having a ring made that has a sharp piece of steel that can stick out. I want to make sure that the lenght will be limited so that it will not be legally classified as a knife. So what lengh of steel constitues a knife

3 inches or more, but it could still be classified as a "deadly weapon" in some instances, even if it is not considered a knife by definition. You can read more on the laws here:
