A few years ago, while living outside the continental US, I had a law suit filed against me. The lawsuit as over an internet site I had put up because I had been wronged by a company. They had ripped me off and I bought a domain and built a site to tell others about them.
They filed a suit against me. I did not have the money to retain an attorney in the states to defend this. Since I did not respond or appear, the company that filed the suit, won a judgement against me. It is for about $60,000. I have a small business, but it is not profitable...no where near the ability to pay this judgement.
I moved back to the states (Florida) about a year ago. Today, I received a filing of foreign judgement from the State of Florida. (I live in Florida...the judgement comes from Utah). It was filed by an attorney in Florida.
Is this a lien, or can they go after my bank accounts and any assets I have? What will their next action be...and What can I do to protest myself. I feel the suit was not valid but did not think it would ever amount to anything. The judgement is very large and I do not have the money or assets to pay this but I am also struggling financially and do not want to have my accounts emptied, etc.
Is Bankruptcy my only option? or, with the new law changes on Bankruptcy, is it even an option? What can I do? I am very concerned and am seeking advice.
Thanks,
DP
