Question

Legal question about car title.

Sent to Legal Experts December 22, 2005 2:23 p.m.

My son's car was impounded due to a DUI, his father convinced the county to sell the car back to him. I bought the car from my ex-husband and got plates on it and applied for a title change. I just got a letter back from the state denying the registration/title change because of a statute in our state that an impounded vehicle can't be sold to anyone with a relationship to the previous owner. I would welcome any suggestions/help preferrable from a lawyer as to how to handle this situation.

How was your ex able to get around the problem when he bought the car?

Thanks in advance.

Steve

I honestly do not know that, one would think that the county would know the statutes of the state and not sell him the car. Thank you so much for the question.

I did not know the rules until I went and tried to get the title changed. I had the police giving me a temporary plate for the car...very bizarre.

Just to clarify, are you saying that your ex never put the car in his name?

Thanks again.
