Question

beneficiaries of insurance policy

my partner of 29 yrs recently died he had insurance through his work he had 2 sons and myself on this policy but the money has been divided 4 ways and trustees wont give me any information on the other party my oldest son is named next of kin and refuse to give him any information and said it was out of their hands can you advise me of next step to put a halt on cheque

Dear Marie -

You may be able to obtain the name of the additional person that was on the policy as that information may be needed for estate tax purposes. Forward a Form 712 to the trustees for completion (link below) However, you are unable to change any of the beneficiaries listed by your partner. The ability to change beneficiaries ceased on your partner's date of death.
