Sent to Legal Experts June 30 01:09 PM

When an insurance policy period is from January 1, 2005 to January 1, 2006, typically is the policy still in effect for the day of January 1, 2006? In other words, if no expiration TIME is listed in the policy, what TIME of day is the policy considered to be expired on last day?

Ex, If you have an insurance policy providing health coverage from 1/01/05 to 01/01/06, and you get treatment on 01/01/06, would that typically be covered by that policy??? (if the insure has not specified a time, i.e. 12:01 a.m etc.???

Thanks!

Hi,

The normal policy expires at midnight of the listed day. So if you received treatment at 01/01/06 at 11:55 you would be fine. But once it was Midnight it would then be 1/2/06 and you would then no longer be covered.

Stacy,

I am a former insurance agent and I agree with my colleague, Walter. That said, in my experience, most insurance polcies list an expiration time, in addition to the date.

Your Insurance Commissioner's Office can confirm this for you:
