First, don't plead guilty. The consequences are likely a fine and a permanent record for theft. However, in most cases, if the person has a clean record, an agreement can be reached to keep the criminal offense off of their record. This has different names in different states. It can be called a "Stay of Prosecution" or a "continuance for dismissal" and many other variations. It means, in essennce, that the prosecutor tables the matter for a defined period (usually one year) and if there are no same or similar offenses, it is dismissed. This--no record. That is what he should shoot for.
