Preventing 18 year old from getting trust money
Sent to Legal Experts September 10 03:16 PM

My daughter will be turning 18 in November. As a result of an insurance settlement for a dog bite when she was a child she will be getting approx.$30,000 when she turns 18. The money is currently in a blocked account held in my name in care of her as a minor.

She graduated from high school in June and moved over 500 miles away with her boyfriend's family. I now find out that no one in his family works and that they are on state assistance. My daughter is also not working and doesn't drive.

Is there any legal way to prevent her from getting this money? I have the horrible feeling that she is being used by this family and they are just waiting for her to turn 18 and get her money. She, however, refuses to believe this and thinks they all just love her and that when she gets her money she will just "help" with her share of expenses.

Unfortunately you cannot control the actions of an 18 year old as she will legally be considered an adult. There is no legal way to prevent her from getting the settlement funds.

Also be aware that she might seek legal action against you if you are preventing access to those funds.

I understand you want to do the best for your child, but the law gives her the right to the money.
