Although you were not the one who caused the damage, the landlord has the ability to hold you responsible for the damage. Your recourse would then be to sue the individual who actually caused the damage. Since you are in privity of contract with the lawyer, you are responsible for the apartment. However, you may want to look and see whether the lease excludes holding you responsible from third-party conduct, however this is doubtful.
This situation may be easiest resolved by working with the landlord to have the responsible party take responsibility.
