I recently lost my job and unable to continie my alimony payments.
I have been faithfully making payments sinc October 2001. My separation agreeement states I must pay for 10 years.

Hi,

If your agreement has been "incorporated but not merged into a divorce decree" (check the decree and agreement language), you can apply to the court for a downward modification due to changed cirumstances. But that will change the decree only. You would remain liable under principles of contract law to pay the agreed upon monies per the separation agreement, but your ex would have to sue you down the line and get a judgment.
