I have been contacted by a debt collector company
Sent to Legal Experts May 24 03:20 PM

I have been contacted by a debt collector company claiming to have bought an old account from a credit card company that I once had credit with. This account is so old I have no records of it and I believe it was discharged in a bankruptcy that I filed over 13 years ago. Do these debt collectors have the right to try and collect on these old accounts and/or accounts that have been filed in bankruptcy so long ago? I have no records of this account and the credit card company also tells me that it is an invalid account and has no information to give me. I don't even know if was one of my old accounts. What can I do to get this collect off my back?

You need to send the debt collector a letter that disputes the debit and ask for verification and evidence of the debt. If they do not repsond then they can not move forward with any other action. If they do respond maybe the documents will clear up which account is in dispute and if it was or was not taken care of in the bankruptcy then you can alert them to the bankruptcy and have it done with.
