Question

Guys I'm in need of help, World Wide Preferred

Sent to Legal Experts September 11, 2007 6:27 p.m.

Guys I'm in need of help, World Wide Preferred Publishers scammed me into getting a magazine server for $50 a month. After 3 payments I canceled my credit card so they wouldn't keep deducting it since I couldn't afford it. Then the calls came rolling in, from unknown numbers and they called both my Cell and Work (Which they said they would never call) and kept bothering me. We worked out a $225 closing cost on it and then when we called them back to pay it they denied us claiming it was too far past due to pay it. They now sent it to a collections agency and want me to pay in excess of $900.00. We agreed on 3.95 a week which comes to about 16.00 a month. She then told me it would be billed to me every 3 months at about $50 for 20 months. Now how would I owe them $900 for 20 months at $16 a month? I did the math here and thats no where near 900. If this went to court, what could i expect, and would I have any chance of winning and not having a pay at all?

Over the phone, They called me and told that since I was a finalist in a contest (I did enter a contest) I was entitled to magazines along with a watch. But they did not record the beginning of the call, I called today and asked for the recording they have and I listened to it. They turned it on right after they asked me which City I lived in and had me repeat me name. Which is only the billing part. I never saw the watch or the form I was supposed to fill out to receive it. I googled the company name and all I found was a bunch of sites and blogs of people who experienced the same thing (or similar) to me I did. I didn't even find a legitimate phone number in the top couple results, just disconnected lines.

listening to the recording they have the lady saying its going to be about $16 a month and I would be billed every 3 months. I don't know how I missed that, but I was driving with my girlfriend to a cider mill this time last fall. After she told me it was apart of the contest I was in and I could choose to receive magazines it sort of implied it was free to me. But of course, they did not record the entire conversation, only their beneficial half. Nor do I remember them saying they were recording me.

Ok. It sounds a bit deceptive - with the amount they say you owe, etc and the fact that there are other complaints under a Google search (which I just checked). At this time, I suggest that you contact the Michigan Attorney General's Office. CLICK HERE and use the Consumer Complaint/Inquiry Filing Information form - while the AG cannot provide you with legal counsel, they can investigate the company and make a determination as to how legitimate the sale was or if, in fact, there was deception. I am sure there is a history with other AG's in the Country and the Michigan AG will be able to tract that for you.

In the meantime, I suggest that you have no further contact with WW Publishers - unless they call you at which time you should tell them not to contact you anymore, that you have canceled the subscription and are now having the company investigated by the Michigan AG.

If my answer has been helpful, please ACCEPT my answer so I get credit for my effort to help you . If I can be of further help, let me know. Appropriate FEEDBACK is appreciated as is a bonus. Thanks ~ Michelle

Ok, if I denied to pay it from the collections agency and assuming everything I've provided to you thus far is 100% true what would you say the probability is that I would win?

They also said if it went to court I would have to pay a bunch in fees, closing fees, court fees, filing fees, and I don't remember everything they said. Would I be bound by law to pay that as well if they are filing the case against me? Or would it only be based on whether I won or lost?

Thank you for your help. :)
