Can I file an employment lawsuit on myown?

I was fired and I have to go to arbitration. it's dragging too much and I want to file a lawsuit to beat the one year deadline, to file myself.
Second, how long should I wait for an answer from the arbitrator? the union told me 30-45 days, it's not too long? Thanks.
